The working principle and role of IGBT in inverter

Date:2024-04-23

An IGBT is a power semiconductor device that combines the high input impedance of a MOSFET with the high current handling capability of a BJT. It consists of the following structure:

N-type emitter: Located at the bottom of the semiconductor structure, this is where the current flows into the device.

P-type base: a thin layer that separates the emitter from the collector.

N-type collector: Located at the top of the semiconductor structure, this is where current flows out of the device.

Insulated Gate: a silicon oxide layer that separates the gate from the base.

When a positive voltage is applied to the gate, it creates a depletion layer between the gate and base. This prevents current flow between the collector and emitter. When the gate voltage decreases, the depletion layer decreases, allowing current to flow from the emitter to the collector.

The role of IGBTs in inverters

IGBTs play a key role in inverters and are used to:

Inverting: Converting direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). This is the main function of the inverter and enables the motor to run at variable speeds.

Rectifier: Converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The inverter uses a rectifier to provide DC power to the IGBTs.

Switching: IGBTs act as switches to turn current on and off during inversion and rectification. They switch at a high frequency, which produces an AC output of the desired frequency and amplitude.

Advantages of IGBTs in inverters

IGBTs have the following advantages in inverters:

High efficiency: IGBTs have low on-resistance and low switching losses, which can improve the overall efficiency of the inverter.

High power density: IGBTs can handle high currents and voltages, which allows them to achieve high power output in a compact form factor.

Fast switching: IGBTs have fast switching times, which allows the inverter to produce high-frequency AC output.

Reliability: IGBTs are highly reliable and can withstand harsh operating conditions.
